Health and Emotions
Why is it that we know what to do but still don’t do it?
We know to eat more veggies and less sugar but why do we choose to overeat the treats instead of what we know we should be eating?
It doesn’t have to do with lack of knowledge about nutrition.
It comes down to emotions. Yup, your emotions get in the way. The good, the bad, they both will make you over eat. Not only do negative feelings like anxiety and stress make you over eat but good feelings can too.
So what’s the solution?
It’s simple but not easy.
What we have to do is have better control of our emotions. Become more Emotionally Intelligent.
This means you can feel your feelings coming through and instead of reacting, you take a step back, observe, control and make the decision that you want.
What this looks like in real life is instead of coming home after a long stressful day and pouring a glass of wine, eating a bag of chips and choosing to order take out because you deserve it… you realize that you’re tired as you’re driving home, you’re aware you want something to make you feel better and your body is craving that glass of wine but when you get home you choose to make yourself a smoothie or have a healthy snack to hold you over while you cook a quick dinner.
And don’t get me wrong I am all in for treating yourself and enjoying the delicious food you love to eat but be aware of your decision don’t eat mindlessly and don’t feel guilty for it afterward.
Notice, be aware, and respond rather than react to your emotions. This is key if you’re someone that struggles with emotionally eating or over eating. It’s a process and there will be days you still choose to over eat, be patient, have compassion and choose persistence over perfection.
